Ana Ofelia Murgua, a Mexican actress who voiced the character of Mam Coco in Pixar's "Coco," died in December at the age of 90. The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature confirmed Ms. Murgua's death in a statement. She is one of the greatest actresses Mexico has had, according to the National Theater Company.
The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature says that Ms. Murgua worked in Mexican film, theater and television for 60 years. She went on to appear in more than 70 plays and over 90 films after graduating from the National School of Theater Arts. She was honored with a golden ariel in 2011.
Ms. Murgua brought a global audience to see her inCoco. The story is based on the Mexican holiday of Da de los Muertos, where a young boy crosses into the realm of the dead. At the end of the film, he and Ms. Murgua sing a duet. The highest grossing film in Mexico when it came out was Pixar's first movie with a minority lead character, "Coco." The production was praised by the Washington Post as an "animated celebration of Mexican culture and traditions".
Ms. Murgua received the Ingmar Bergman medal in April for her acting achievements. She said that her life has been good because she has a passion for something.
