Keisei Tominaga splashes the 3-pointer, then Sam Hoiberg gets the steal and bucket to force a timeout.
The top two teams in the country lost to unranked opponents on Tuesday, the same day that the college football season ended. Houston lost its first game of the season at Iowa State. It was the first time since February 2016 that the top two teams in the AP men's college basketball poll lost to unranked opponents. The Boilermakers entered Tuesday with a seven-game winning streak, including victories over Arizona, Illinois and Alabama. The Boilermakers cut Nebraska's lead to one in the first six minutes of the second half, but the Cornhuskers responded with a 14-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game. Nebraska led by six points at the half and finished on an 11-2 run. "We had a couple good fights there in the second half where we were able to pull within single digits, but then they pushed it back to double digits." The Cornhuskers shot 14-for-23 from 3-point range as a team, with seven players making a shot. The program has four such wins in its history, the first of them coming under coach Jerry Bush. Mast said that the shots were going in in the beginning and gave the team a little spark. The Boilermakers have lost to unranked opponents in each of the past two seasons. North Carolina was the only other team to lose multiple games as No. 1 to unranked opponents in consecutive seasons. The last team to lose a game this season was Houston, who fell at Iowa State in their Big 12 debut. "I don't know if it was more Iowa State than us, but we were introduced quickly to 'Hilton Magic'," he said. I don't know what, we were just, I wish I did. The teams were tied at halftime and neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way. Iowa State freshman Milan Momcilovic hit a fadeaway over two Houston defenders to give the Cyclones a two-point lead at the end of the game. The game was decided by two free throws by Momcilovic with 10 seconds left. The team that sets the tone should be the one that throws the first punch. I think our guys were able to dig in and not give up despite the fact that there were points in the game where it almost felt like we were hanging on. The losses by Houston and Purdue open the door for the Jayhawks to return to the top spot. Bill Self's team, which received two first-place votes in this week's AP Top 25 poll, plays at UCF on Wednesday night before visiting Oklahoma on Saturday.
