The Museum of Art in Florida said that it was dropping its claims of fraud and conspiracy against the five co-owners of the paintings who said they were created by Jean-Michel Basquiat. The museum's board chairman said in a statement that they would focus their case on the former executive director, who he said had been responsible for "handpicking" the paintings. The museum had an exhibition of the purported Basquiats that ended in June of 2016 when members of the Art Crime Team raided the museum. The F.B.I. was told by a Los Angeles auctioneer that he and an associate had forged the paintings. The museum, also known as OMA, filed a lawsuit against five co-owners of the fake paintings, along with De Groft, who was fired from his position as the museum's executive director.
There are legal claims against the owners of the fake Basquiat.
