18 New York Artists were tapped to create works for JFK.

John F. Kennedy Airport will soon be a hub for world-class art. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Tuesday that 18 artists from seven countries have been selected to create installations for the airport's new Terminal 6. Sky Hopinka, Charles Gaines, and Barbara Kruger are some of the New York-based artists who will have works at the terminal. Some of the artists in the group are based in New York City or New York State but were born abroad, such as Felipe Baeza and Uman, who were both born in Mexico. JFK Airport is set to have the largest permanent art collection of any New York airport, after the Port Authority at LaGuardia Airport in Queens and Newark Liberty International Airport unveiled new public artwork. There are six large-scale installations in Delta Terminal C that pay homage to New York's diversity and history, while Terminal B has five installations. Newark gained two monumental artworks by Layqa Nuna Yawar. JFK Millennium Partners, a group of private developers, funded the $22 million art budget for Terminal 6. The budget for Terminal 6 is double that for LaGuardia. The artworks planned for Terminal 6 include suspended sculptures by Laure Prouvost and Haegue Yang; wall works by Nevin Aladag and Sky Hopinka; and 10 monumental glass mosaic floor medallions that promise to invoke a New York sense of place. Some of the artists working in the last medium are: Charline von Heyl, Eddie Martinez, Kambui Olujimi, and Candida Alvarez. The Port Authority has a strategy to create world-class airports that are becoming destinations in their own right. The public art at JFK's new Terminal 6 will dazzle travelers and help create a sense of place unique to New York.
