MovieA Quiet Place is already the highest-grossing horror movie of the year.

A Quiet Place lifted the box office curse on horror movies.

The year might have gotten off to a slow start at the box office, but it is starting to heat up in the back half of the decade. "A Quiet Place: Day One" became the first horror movie to hit $1 billion after three weeks in theaters, while "Inside Out 2" just crossed the $1 billion mark. The third film in the sci-fi series earned an estimated $53 million in the US. "Quiet Place" prequel took in $46 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $98.6 million, making it the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. The previous record was held by the South Korean movie "Exhuma," which did $98.6 million worth of business around the world, becoming a modest hit in the U.S. "Night Swim" opened in January and was the biggest movie of the year at the box office. "The First Omen" and Sony's little horror movie "Tarot" were leading the pack. The horror genre was a hit until this year, when it stopped being a reliable hit-making genre. "Day One" had a lot going for it that helped it soar at the box office. The first two "A Quiet Place" films from director John Krasinski were a huge hit with audiences.
