Io is the most volcanic world in the solar system.

ScienceIo is the most volcanic world in the solar system.

Io is a moon of Jupiter and the most volcanic world in the solar system.

It was taken on December 30, 2023.

Since 2001, NASA's Galileo has imaged the volcanic world, but the closest views of Io have been captured by NASA's Juno. The moon's pockmarked surface is captured in six images by the spacecraft. According to Live Science's sister site Space.com, Io is the most volcanic world in the solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes. The moon's proximity to Jupiter causes it to rub against Jupiter's moons. The volcanic eruptions on Io are orders of magnitude more powerful than those on Earth because of the turbulent ocean of magma under the rocky surface. The images will shed light on how Io's volcanoes vary, how bright and hot they are, and how Io's activity is connected to Jupiter's magnetosphere. The next flyby of Io is scheduled for February 3rd.
