Mean Girls' queen bees beat The Beekeeper.

Arts and EntertainmentMean Girls' queen bees beat The Beekeeper.

The musical adaptation of Mean Girls is the highest grossing movie of the week, despite the fact that the movie was directed by a woman. The film, which stars Angourie Rice as high school newcomer Cady Heron, brought in $32 million during the holiday weekend at the U.S. box office. Despite a few suggestions that the movie caught some people off guard when its characters burst into song, the film still acquitted itself well. It has yet to open in the U.K. or New Zealand, so there is plenty of room to grow. This is all for a film that was originally intended to be an original film for Paramount+, but was changed to a theatrical release after enthusiastic test screenings. The movie made $18.6 million back in the US and even more overseas, adding up to $39.1 million, which is more than Mean Girls brought in globally. Not bad for a January release that has been ridiculed by critics for being dumb. The Book of Clarence opened ninth at the domestic box office, bringing in just $3.1 million against a $40 million budget.
