Iranian officials and allied militant groups in the region vowed revenge for the killing of a high-ranking Iranian general. The killing of Sayyed Razi Mousavi, an adviser to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Syria, came as a result of the Israel-Hamas war. Iran-backed groups in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq have launched attacks on Israel. The US launched a naval operation to protect shipping routes in the Red Sea after attacks by the rebels in Yemen. More than 100 attacks on bases housing US troops in Iraq and Syria have been launched by Iran-backed militias in Iraq under the umbrella group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. The group claimed to have attacked a US base in Erbil in northern Iraq. The US military carried out a precision airstrike that is believed to have killed a number of Kataib Hezbollah militants. Iran's official news agency IRNA and the UK-based opposition war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Israel struck the Sayeda Zeinab neighbourhood on Monday. Gen Qassem Suleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020. The Israeli military and Syrian state media did not make a statement about the attack. The Iranian president said that the Israeli regime will pay for the crime. Iran's ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, condemned the killing and said that it would get a response at the right time. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the Israeli military targeted the man after he entered a farm in the area, which was one of several offices for Hezbollah. The militant group in Lebanon along with Iran and Russia helped keep the Assad government in power. Hezbollah said in a statement that he was one of the best of brothers who worked to support the Islamic resistance in Lebanon. Israel does not usually acknowledge its airstrikes on Syria. But when it does, it says it is targeting Iran-backed groups there.
