PoliticsSchumer delayed the holiday break to press for a border deal.

Senate Democrats decided to stay in Washington for next week's holiday break and push for passage of a bill that would give military assistance for Ukraine and make it harder to migrate to the US border with Mexico. The move was made by Schumer to intensify the pressure on Republicans to drop their opposition to the bill after House G.O.P. leaders left Washington for the year. It also showed Democrats' determination to show the public that they were doing everything in their power to strike a deal, as well as fresh optimism among Senate negotiators who had been haggling over a border enforcement package. Mr. Schumer said on the Senate floor that if they believe something is important and urgent, they should stay. He said there would be another vote on the security package next week. If the Senate can reach an agreement on one of the most intractable issues Congress has faced, the bill will face an uphill battle. Speaker Mike Johnson threw cold water on the idea of quick action.
