The first shower of the year could be the strongest.

ScienceThe first shower of the year could be the strongest.

According to NASA and the American meteorite society, it could be the strongest shower of the year on January 3 and January 4. NASA says to expect 120 meteors per hour during the peak, while the AMS says an average of 25 per hour. The peak for observers to view from North America is between the hours of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The peak of these showers is short because of the thin stream of particles and the fact that the Earth crosses the stream at a perpendicular angle. The weather will affect how well they can be seen. It is possible to catch some of the action from the shower now, as it is listed as being active between Dec. 26 through Jan. The shower's name comes from the constellation from which the particles appear. The constellation for which a meteor shower is named is only used to aid viewers in determining which shower they are viewing on a given night. The Quadrantid's are visible throughout the night sky, so you should not only look at the constellation of Bootes.

NASA says that the Quadrantids are known for their bright fireballs that last longer than normal meteor streaks. The AMS invites viewers to report seeing a fireball on its website. The asteroid 2003 EH1 was first observed in 2003 at theLowell Observatory.

NASA says to find an area away from the city or street lights. In less than 30 minutes you will be able to see meteorites.

There will be meteorite showers in 2024.
