The director of the Miss Nicaragua contest was accused by the government of being involved in an anti-patriotic conspiracy to overthrow the president. The director, Karen Celebertti, and the actress, Laura Palacios, had taken part in large anti-government protests in order to challenge the rule of the Ortega government. The husband of Ms. Celebertti was involved in the protests. Xiomara Blandino, the daughter-in-law of the president, criticized Ms. Celebertti's organization last month. A person close to the family who asked to remain anonymous said that the husband and son of Ms. Celebertti have been arrested since the Miss Universe competition. Ms. Celebertti was stranded in Mexico with her daughter and resigned from her job on Monday, after 23 years in the job. The people connected to Ms. Palacios are the most unusual targets of the government's campaign against its opponents. It has expelled and arrested many people, including Roman Catholic bishops and nuns.
